We carried out a survey on how many regular people like us think of Manchester. This was to show what our perspective of the city is, what are our concerns and how many people really think like this. This survey not only shows the regularity of these concerns but shows the main dangers we fear the most.

According to our survey, only 10% of people we reached out to said they feel Manchester is safe with over 50% saying they feel that Manchester is unsafe or dangerous. This shows that there is an issue in Manchester around people’s security and what is happening on the streets.

A majority 85% of people also said that they feel unsafe during the night compared to the day. This clearly shows that there is either a rise in crime and violent behavior or a drop in safety patrol on the streets during those times, making people feel unsafe or at threat. Our campaign is aiming to change that and make the streets after dark #citysafe.

There are a variety of crimes and assaults one can fall into. Our results show that over 80% fear knife crime, sexual assault and violence, hence why we are aiming to keep knives off the streets and help people avoid violence and assault by directing them in the right direction when on a night out.

Nearly half said they can’t find help when in trouble. Even though a majority of people said they can find the right help when in trouble or feeling at threat, one can have trouble allocating places to go when intoxicated and vulnerable. Efforts like the Manchester Street Pastors and Manchester Street Angels are a great help in the situations mentioned as they are continuously patrolling areas in Manchester that are popular for night life. We need more efforts like these on the streets and awareness on where people can go if in trouble.

We also asked what can authorities or communities do to make the streets safe after dark as well as raise awareness outside this campaign. We had various comments which you can find in our open public results, but the most popular ones were to educate students and communities on violence on the streets and the consequences of night life, wanting well lit streets and surveillance and needing more approachable police and patrol on the streets at night. A suggestion which really caught our eye was knowing where helpful transport links and security are located.

Our perspective of Manchester is important because it tells us what people are saying about Manchester and why. From current results shared across Facebook, Twitter and student community groups, we have seen that a majority of demographics think Manchester needs to improve its security, reduce crime rates and aid those in need of help.

To show how much we need safety on the streets, sign the petition and together, we can be #citysafe.
